I'll actually make the template 'open source', so anyone who feels like it, can give a wack at making awards.

Its simple really, just draw your icon on a new layer, above the gloss layer.
Beyond that, all I can tell you is that the path, pencil, paintbrush, and eraser tools are extremely useful.

If you'd care to check out some of my graphics tutorials (a bit old), you can get more of a feel for GIMP.

Did I say 'rough'? Well, I'm sure I've seen much worse than what you can do. I used to be active on a failing animation forum, some of the rough drafts that came through for the posting ranks...eegh...
